We all run after the new client. Meanwhile, the one who already bought from us goes cold and leaves without us noticing. Winning them back costs five times less. Here's how, without expensive CRMs or posturing.
There's a client who bought from you last year, was happy, and you haven't spoken to them since. Not because you did anything wrong, quite the opposite: you simply stopped showing up. And people, when you stop showing up, go with the next one who does. It's not disloyalty, it's forgetfulness, yours.
I like to start here because it's the most expensive and most invisible hole in any small business. We invest everything in acquisition (ads, social, offers for people who don't know us) and let what we'd already won die off. And the figure is stubborn: winning back an old client costs about five times less than getting a new one. Five times. Businesses that last are built on that.
The first thing people tell me is «right, Pedro, but I'm not going to keep pestering them». And they're half right. Pestering with a mass promo, no; writing like a person, with a specific reason, yes. The difference is in the message.
Short, personal and with a real reason to come back. For example:
«Hi [name], we haven't seen you in a while. I'll hold [a specific detail or perk] for you if you drop by this week.»
It works because it uses their name, doesn't sound like a company circular and gives them a reason with a date. It's not «we miss you», it's «I've got something for you, and it has an expiry date».
The best reactivation is the one you don't even need, because you set it up on the day the client was happiest: right at delivery or at closing. That «this turned out great!» moment is gold, and almost nobody uses it.
Plant the next visit in advance.
It's small, but it multiplies returns: you give them a clear reason to come back instead of waiting for them to remember on their own. And usually they don't.
Same moment, another opportunity we always let slip. A review is asked for when the client is happiest, not three weeks later by email. At delivery, when they tell you they loved it, that's the instant.
And truly make it easy: send them the direct link to your Google in that very moment, on WhatsApp. The difference between asking while it's hot with the link one tap away, or cold and making them go looking for it, is enormous. One gets left; the other, nobody leaves.
So that none of this depends on your memory, set up a ridiculously simple system. You don't need a CRM at two hundred euros a month. You need consistency.
That's all. Most clients don't leave angry. They leave because you stopped existing for them. Exist, and they stay.
Acquisition is fine and you have to do it. But a business that only acquires is a bucket with a hole: however much water you pour in, it never fills. Plug the hole first. Look after the person who already trusted you. It's cheaper, it's more pleasant, and it's what separates the businesses that scrap every month from the ones that grow with ease.
We help you set up a simple, sustainable follow-up so the person who already trusted you doesn't go cold.
