Five steps to get on the map

• Create (or claim) your Google Business profile. It's free and it's step one. Without a profile you don't appear on the map. If one already exists but isn't yours, claim it.
• Fill it in fully and properly. Exact name, address and phone, the same as on your website and with no variations. Opening hours, the right category, services and real photos. The more complete it is, the better Google treats you.
• Reviews rule. Businesses with more reviews (and replies to them) tend to rank higher. Ask your happy clients to leave a review and reply to them all, including the so-so ones, politely.
• Consistency across the internet. Make sure your name, address and phone appear the same on your website, your social profiles and directories. Google likes consistency, and contradictions confuse it.
• Post on the profile. Google Business lets you post updates and offers. Doing it now and then is a signal that the business is alive.

This takes time and upkeep, but it's one of the most profitable things you can do if you sell in your local area.
